SAWIA cautions against portable long service leave

Monday, Dec 14, 2015

Currently long service leave is regulated by State and Territory laws. This means that there is a great deal of variability in entitlements and rules on taking long service leave. The Senate Education and Employment Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into the feasibility of, and options for, creating a national long service standard, and the portability of long service leave.

In a submission to the inquiry, SAWIA argued that the variability in long service leave regulation is an issue for any wine industry employer with operations in more than one State. However, any harmonisation must not result in any extra costs being added on employers.

SAWIA fundamentally disagrees with the principle of portability of long service leave as it would provide no benefits to employers in the terms of loyalty of service, but would simply be a cost burden on business and further severs ‘ties’ with the original purpose of the entitlement.
