Community Panel says the South East Drains should be funded by government - SAWIA agrees

The State Government requested that Natural Resources, South East convene a Community Panel to look at possible options to ensure the drainage network and its associated infra structure is maintained now and into the future.  In a submission to the Community Panel, SAWIA raised concerns about the inadequacy of the review process, and pointed out that a possible levy on the local community could be inequitable.  The submission was supported by the Limestone Grape and Wine Council and Coonawarra Grape and Wine Inc. SAWIA members can access the submission from the link on this page. It was therefore pleasing to note that the Community Panel recognised the benefits of the South East Drainage Network to the whole State, and resoundingly rejected the notion that the South East Community be directly charged to fund ongoing maintenance and operations. The Community Panel's report will now be tabled in State Parliament and the Government will respond to the recommendation in due course. More information on the review is available from Natural Resources, South East (http://www.naturalresources.sa.gov.au/southeast/projects/community-panel/Community-Panel-recommendations)
