This class is ideal for those who enjoy drinking wine and aspire to learn more, those who would like to gain confidence tackling wine shop selections and restaurant wine lists and is perfect for those starting out in the hospitality or wine industries.
We’ll introduce you to Australian wine regions and styles and focus on tasting techniques and wine vocabulary so you can understand what it is you are tasting and be able to express yourself. You will learn the fundamentals principles of wine making and how factors such as climate, soil and wine making techniques will affect wine style and quality. You will enjoy a number of popular styles of wines from different regions and have fun learning in a relaxed environment.
This course is held at the National Wine Centre over five weeks, for two hours each week.

Week 1 – Sensory evaluation of wine, an aroma and palate exercise, wine faults, the practice of sensory evaluation, the theory behind food & wine matching principles (4 wines tasted)
Week 2 – Viticultre and wine making fundamentals, an in depth look at white wine varieties and styles, aging white wines (8 wines tasted)
Week 3 – Factors affecting wine style and quality, how sparkling wines are made, sensory evaluation of six sparkling wine styles, serving wine - glassware and decanting (6 wines tasted)
Week 4 – Reading wine labels, rose and red wine making fundamentals, blending wine, an indepth look at red wine varieties, aging red wines (8 wines tasted)
Week 5 – An in depth look at dessert and fortified wines and how they are made, a wine options game and DIY tasting note (8 wines tasted)
Understand the principles of sensory evaluation and apply them to a diverse range of wine styles;
Competently discuss sensory characteristics of various varieties and styles using a common set of terms;
Understand basic wine making processes;
Understand basic viticulture practices;
Understand the impact of climate on wine styles;
Understand the changes that may occur in wines during the production and the aging process;
Appreciate the variances and influences of blending different wine varieties;
Have an understanding of varietal profiles and begin to develop an understanding of the regional characteristics of South Australian and Australian wines styles.
Cancellation policy: Written notice of cancellations must be received no later than 14 days prior to course starting dates for a refund. If notification is less than 14 days, only an alternative course will be offered. The purchase is tranferable and another person can attend in your place if you are unable to attend.

National Wine Centre Food Board: You are welcome to add on a cheese or antipasto individually plated board when booking your course, simply check the number you wish to purchase and it will be added to your invoice. The cheese and antipasto boards are priced at a per head price and are unable to be shared in accordance with our COVID-Safe plan. All food must be ordered and payed for 5 days prior to your course start date.
