The program provide employers with an opportunity to trial a young person to find out if they are the right fit for the business. As the internships are voluntary, the person should be keen if they participate in the program.
Young people are eligible to participate in a program if they are aged 17–24 on income support, have been in employment services for six months or more, and are registered with a jobactive, Transition to Work or Disability Employment Services provider.
Under the program, businesses are paid $1,000 upfront for taking on an intern. The intern themselves receives $200 a fortnight on top of their Newstart or Youth Allowance benefits.
