The keys to managing waste

Managing waste is an ongoing challenge for grape growers and wine producers, and SAWIA helps our members to tackle the toughest of these problems. 

Treated timber waste

 

The Treated Timber Waste Management Guidelines address many of the risks and hazards associated with the management of treated timber, especially used CCA (copper chromate arsenate) vineyard posts. The guidelines also set out the recommended practices for storage and transport management in an easy to read tabular format. 

 

Recycling Packaging Waste
Wineries have obligations under the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure, which aims to reduce environmental degradation arising from the disposal of used packaging materials. This is achieved either voluntarily by joining and complying with the programs of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), or by direct regulation by SA’s Environment Protection Authority.

Wastewater
SAWIA has worked with the South Australian Environment Protection Authority to prepare guidelines for wineries and distilleries to better manage their wastewater. These guidelines are available here.
